Marvel – What If...

Qual leitor de quadrinhos nunca se perguntou, após ler uma saga ou arco, “E se isso tivesse acontecido diferente?”. Todos os personagens e grandes equipes da Marvel (como em qualquer outra editora) passaram por inúmeros acontecimentos em suas vidas que transformaram de forma sutil ou radical o desenvolvimento desses personagens e equipe nos tempos seguintes.

Fosse por decisão dos personagens ou não, cada detalhe, de certa forma, influencia a história posterior do universo Marvel. Uma morte alterada, uma batalha vencida ou perdida, poderes diferentes, uma mesma equipe criada por outro personagem ou apenas dizer um sim ou não, tudo tem grande influência. E para isso temos “What If...?”.

What If...? é uma série antológica de quadrinhos da Marvel que explora situações que poderiam ter acontecido de maneira diferente no universo dos personagens da Marvel. Com o anúncio da Disney/Marvel de uma série de animações levando esse título e proposta para as telas do streaming, muitos ainda desconhecem esse rico (e divertido) material em quadrinhos e toda a história por trás dele. Essa postagem é para resgatar e apresentar ele aos fãs.

Com histórias de uma edição, sempre narradas pelo Vigia, a jornada de What If...? nos quadrinhos começou em fevereiro de 1977, com What if... #1 ... Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four? (“O que aconteceria se o Homem-Aranha se juntasse ao Quarteto Fantástico?). Na virada dos anos 60 para os anos 70 tanto Homem-Aranha quanto o Quarteto Fantástico eram um grande sucesso entre os leitores americanos da Marvel. Assim, a editora aproveitou um pequeno fato que apareceu em Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963, lançada no Brasil recentemente em Coleção Clássica Marvel #1 – O Espetacular Homem-Aranha) para a primeira edição de What If...?. Nessa história o Homem-Aranha tenta se juntar ao Quarteto Fantástico para tentar resolver os eternos problemas financeiros de Peter Parker. A tentativa não se concretizou e cada um seguiu seu caminho.

Na edição #1 de What If...? o Vigia nos narra algo diferente do que havíamos lido na edição original. Nela Reed Richards aceita a entrada do Homem-Aranha na equipe. Rapidamente vemos uma série de acontecimentos que ocorrem de forma diferente. Todos os vilões do Aranha são facilmente derrotados, agora que ele tem a ajuda dos outros membros do Quarteto (que passou a se chamar Quinteto Fantástico. Mas a principal diferença ocorre com Sue Storm. O Quinteto Fantástico e Namor são manipulados pelo Mestre dos Brinquedos em uma intrincada série de acontecimentos que culminam com Sue deixando o grupo e escolhendo ficar com Namor. Ou seja, eles voltam a ser um quarteto, mas sem a Mulher Invisível. Este é apenas um exemplo do tipo de aventuras e histórias lançadas dentro da série What If...?

O primeiro volume de What If teve um total de 48 edições regulares (47 edições e 1 especial), sendo publicada de 1977 a 1989. O segundo volume, lançado de 1989 a 1998, teve 115 edições (são 114 edições, com duas edições com o número #1 lançadas juntas) e continuou sendo lançado regularmente.

Esses dois primeiros volumes, totalizando 163 edições, tinham uma temática simples e direta – personagens tomando decisões diferentes daquelas que já tínhamos lido nas edições regulares ou origens diferentes de algum elemento de personagens/grupos. Tivemos de tudo um pouco.

Outra característica das edições dessa época foi o humor. Muitas delas ganharam um What If cômico que ia de duas páginas à até mesmo apenas um quadrinho. Coisas hilárias foram lançadas, tais como E se a aranha fosse mordida por uma tia May radioativa ou E se Keith Richards fosse o líder do Quarteto Fantástico. Era uma peculiaridade da época e fez tanto sucesso que renderam duas edições especiais. A edição #34 dos volumes 1 e 2 foram lançadas como compêndios dessas visões cômicas com dezenas de pequenas histórias.

Ao final dos anos 90 a temática começou a ficar um tanto desgastada e genérica, perdendo espaço entre a preferência dos leitores regulares, saindo de circulação. Em 2004 What If foi resgatada por C.B. Cebulski. Ele mudou a estrutura de lançamento da revista, saindo das edições regulares e transformando o título em seis edições especiais lançadas todas juntas em fevereiro de 2005. Os temas escolhidos tratavam de elementos centrais de personagens importantes do universo, nos moldes dos volumes anteriores. E se Karen Page não tivesse morrido, ou E se tia May tivesse morrido no lugar do tio Ben, e ainda E se Professor X e Magneto tivessem criando os X-Men juntos, todas elas histórias alternativas bombásticas. O sucesso do resgate foi tão grande que a revista voltou nos anos seguintes.

Em 2005 o título What If passou para as mãos do editor Mark Panccia. O título voltou a ser lançado em poucas edições em fevereiro do ano seguinte, mas com uma ousada mudança de abordagem. As histórias agora estavam ligadas à Terra-717, vistas pelos olhos de um gênio da computação chamado Hector Espejo, que curiosamente se intitulava O Vigia, que invadira os arquivos dos Vigilantes. Então, ao invés de olhar para as consequências de uma decisão não tomada ou uma alternativa diferente da vida de um personagem, as edições lançadas em fevereiro de 2006 ofereceram visões substancialmente diferentes dos heróis da Marvel de uma outra Terra, como um Capitão América da era da guerra civil americana e um Quarteto Fantástico apoiado pelos soviéticos.

A justificativa dada pelo editor na época foi simples. O universo Marvel estava recentemente (naqueles anos) passando por eventos e arcos que se centravam ou tocavam em elementos temporais como Era do Apocalipse e Dinastia M e todas as possibilidades de futuros alternativos. Isso por si só já era uma enxurrada de histórias alternativas dentro de mesmo universo. Um What If nos moldes do que havia nos anos 70 a 90, naquele momento das publicações da Marvel dos primeiros anos do século XXI, seria chover no molhado.

Para o ano de 2007 What If saiu da Terra-717 e voltou para o universo Marvel regular, concentrando-se nos grandes arcos dos tempos recentes, abordando Guerra Civil, a Aniquilação, X-Men: Ascensão e Queda e Planeta Hulk. A temática centrada em eventos recentes do ano editorial da Marvel continuou em 2008, abordando Hulk Contra o Mundo, Guerras Secretas e Dinastia M, além de contar com um bônus. Nas edições de 2008 tivemos uma novidade. Foi a primeira vez que tivemos uma história lançada em 5 partes, cada uma delas constando de uma das edições daquele ano, retratando duas das novas equipes queridinhas do público – Os Fugitivos e os Jovens Vingadores.

Até 2015 (com uma falha em 2012) a estratégia editorial foi a mesma, sempre abordando grandes arco e eventos recentes. Houve uma pausa em 2016 e 2017. No retorno das edições, em 2018, houve também um retorno às origens das publicações da What If, revisitando momentos pontuais de grandes personagens tais como E se Flash Thompson fosse o Homem-Aranha ou E se o Homem-Aranha se tornasse o Justiceiro.

Em 11 de abril de 2019 tivemos o grande anúncio da Disney/Marvel introduzindo What If na grade de lançamentos para televisão/streaming. É uma revolução? Particularmente considero que sim.

No Brasil, a maioria das edições nunca foi lançada por nenhuma editora e as que foram lançadas eram normalmente ligadas à alguns personagens específicos.
